Not feeling great? Lots of things not going your way? It looks like a bad day is brewing and it’s not even 10am? Let me help you LAUGH your way out of this funk!
It starts with something as simple as a smile. Nah, don’t smile. It won’t help anyway. Wrong! Just letting your lips curl up on the sides and plastering a SMILE on your face - even if you don’t feel a shred of happiness - will start sending endorphins to your brain. Pretty soon - go ahead, smile a great big smile. Hold it; stretch your cheeks. Great. Now do it 10 times - relax in between each smile for a few seconds. Try not to feel it - SURPRISE! You’ve tricked your body into feeling - what is that? HAPPINESS!!! You may have even giggled at yourself. If you did it in front of a mirror or with a friend, you probably admitted to the feeling of ridiculousness, too. Congratulations - you’re on your way to a HAPPIER you!
It’s true. Research says you can choose happiness. While you can’t undo some of the ‘stuff’ that happens to you out there in the big bad world, you do get to decide how to show up for it.
Let’s think for a moment about the actor who is about to enter stage left for a big scene. He takes a second to collect himself as he’s waiting in the wings. He brings to his attention just the right body language and facial expressions, supporting how he is ‘supposed’ to feel in this scene. YOU can do this same thing for any moment of your day.
Just this week I tumbled out of bed, still groggy from not sleeping long enough, only to be greeted by my father’s voice, with an energized lilt to it. “Good morning!” he said with a huge smile on his face. I couldn’t help it. I smiled back. His intonation changed my whole day. Honestly. Later that night, as I was describing some of the health benefits of Laughter Yoga to my audience, I told them the ‘Good Morning Story.’ I could see the lightbulbs bursting. “I’ll have to remember this often. It will change the way I greet Joe in the morning!” one woman enthusiastically shared. As a presenter, it doesn’t get much better than that! Instant recognition of how to apply what I’m trying to teach. Wow!
We laughed; we played; I made up some great exercises, taught them the standards, and spent some time talking about how just by shifting our perspective and incorporating some of the simple laughter exercises and breathing techniques, we can begin to feel better. It really works.
The group had sluggishly entered the room, unsure of what to expect. They left energized and ready for whatever comes their way. As I cleaned up my stuff to head home, LAUGHTER echoed off the hallway walls and spilled over into the lobby. “I feel really good all over. I feel happy. I really do - like I’ve been to a real good party,” one woman said to the people who had missed our session. I still can’t stop smiling.
Life can be a party! Even when bad stuff happens. It’s up to us.
Let me know if I can help you learn how to create HAPPY with SMILES and LAUGHTER. You are invited to join my FREE Laughter Call Monday mornings at 9am CST. 15 minutes of shared LAUGHTER will carry you through the day and maybe even the week!
